Obituary

Darwin K Sumsion, 91, of St George, Utah, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2022.  He was born April 20, 1930, in Preston, Idaho, to John Bert Sumsion and Mary Caroline Hansen Sumsion.

He married Deon Rodgers Sumsion on October 26, 1953 and later sealed together in the Oquirrh Mountain Utah LDS Temple in 2010.  She preceded him in death on August 20, 2008.

Darwin graduated from the Class of 1948, Malad Idaho High School, then trained In Mountain Home, Idaho to serve in the US Airforce as a Base Electric Power Lineman during the Korean War and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia. He lived in residences within Utah, and the Four Corner States as his employment necessitated.

He settled in St George, Utah upon retiring from 29 years of employment for Utah Power and Light in 1986 as a Transmission Line Supervisor--responsible for many transmission lines built that are still in operation today—built from Salt Lake City, Utah to Kemmerer, Wyoming; from Telluride to Durango and Silverton Colorado; and the Aneth Oil Fields, Montezuma Creek near Blanding, Utah.  Many of these transmission lines were built through rough mountain terrain and difficult weather conditions.  He was a very hard worker, loved his career choice, and lived a long, simple, happy life, and had a keen sense of “fixing things.”

He was an avid golfer, proudly scoring 7 “Hole in Ones” throughout his lifetime, and golfed until the last few months of his life. He also enjoyed trailer traveling with his wife, fishing, motorbike riding, and his associations with many friends and former co-workers.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as a home teacher, High Priest, and later on a faithful Temple patron. He loved his family, friends and neighbors, and they loved him.

Darwin is survived by his four children: Dennis (Debbie) Sumsion, South Jordan, Utah; Larry (Cheryl) Sumsion, Herriman, Utah; Susan (Vance) Witbeck, Rexburg, Idaho; Sheila (David) Baugh, Layton, Utah, 11 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren, and two brothers Mark and Neil Sumsion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister, and his wife.

A viewing for his friends and family will be held WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 2022 at 10:00am at the Wheeler Mortuary located at 211 E 200 S Springville, Utah prior to the Graveside Service.

GRAVESIDE MEMORIAL SERVICE and burial will be held, WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 2022 beginning at 11:30am at the Springville, Utah Evergreen Cemetery, located at 1997 S 400 E, Springville, UT with a Military gun salute provided by Springville volunteers.
